Dental practice move in Carmarthenshire leads to new jobs


A dental practice in the north of Carmarthenshire is moving to new premises and creating jobs with support from a grant scheme administered by the county council.
Deintyddfa Emlyn in Newcastle Emlyn has been awarded a £128,000 Carmarthenshire Rural Enterprise Fund grant to move from the doctors’ surgery in Lloyds Terrace, Adpar, Newcastle Emlyn to the old day centre in the town’s Church Lane.
Dentists Arwel Jones and Neil Jones, who are both from Carmarthenshire, took over the practice in 2011. They now want to expand and are revamping the old day centre to create a state-of-the-art dental practice.
The grant will bring the derelict former day centre building back into use and the move will create eight full-time and one part-time job.
Deintyddfa Emlyn is the second business to benefit from the £4.4m Carmarthenshire Rural Enterprise Fund.
The partners in Deintyddfa Emlyn, Arwel Jones and Neil Jones, said: “We are very pleased to be given the opportunity to relocate and expand Deintyddfa Emlyn under the CREF scheme.
“This state-of-the-art dental practice will not only benefit the local economy by the number of jobs created but also provide greater access to high quality dental care for the residents of Newcastle Emlyn and surrounding area. This is fantastic news and we are very excited to start the project.”
Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “I’m pleased that the CREF Scheme has been able to support Deintyddfa Emlyn. It will enable the practice to upgrade its facilities and expand creating nine new high-end professional jobs.”
Council Leader Cllr Emlyn Dole said: “This grant to Deintyddfa Emlyn is enabling the practice to take on nine new people. It is in line with the purpose of the CREF which is to create employment opportunities in rural Carmarthenshire.”
Local member Cllr Hazel Evans said: “This scheme is not only bringing jobs into the town and creating first class facilities but will also bring an empty building in the town back into use. It is good news that the CREF scheme has been able to support it.”

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
