Bid to set up new Carmarthen branch of the Royal British Legion


A meeting to discuss setting up a new Carmarthen branch of the Royal British Legion is due to take place this week.
The council’s armed forces champion, Cllr David Jenkins, will host Thursday’s meeting at County Hall, with representatives of Carmarthen Town Council, The Royal British Legion and Armed Forces communities in attendance.
The meeting starts at 6.30pm and anyone interested in becoming a member is welcome to attend.
Becoming a member can be extremely rewarding from forming a committee, receiving relevant training, to taking an active role in fundraising activities and Remembrance
Cllr David Jenkins said: “The Royal British Legion are keen to re-establish here in Carmarthen and this meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss a way forward. As the council’s armed forces champion I’m keen to work with the Royal British Legion and will do all I can to help.”
The legion has 175 branches and more than 10,000 members across Wales but there is currently no branch in Carmarthen.
Anna Looker, RBL membership support officer for South West Wales, said: “Carmarthen is a town with a rich military history and it’s incredibly sad that there is currently no legion branch within the county town. Legion branch members play an important role in Remembrance in their areas and in raising money for the Poppy Appeal, which supports veterans, their families and dependents in the local community.”
Membership is open to men and women of all ages, whether they have served or not. Legion membership can provide:
• An opportunity to help deliver welfare activities in your local community to help beneficiaries in need.
• A chance to make new friends
• An opportunity to give back to the Armed Forces. Be part of a nationwide fundraising team to help give back to the Armed Forces as they have served us.
• A stronger local community. Legion branches are pillars within the local community. They uphold local Remembrance services and are a great home to start networking from.
• Improved welfare support for the Armed Forces community from Government.

Former Gower MP Gareth Wardell was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel. 'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
